There are two sides to Tulum. El pueblo (the city) or the beach side. They are not super far from one another but they have completely different vibes. i’m all for a beach vacation but I LOVED that Howlita Tulum, where we stayed, was located in el pueblo.

Set in a residential area, the hotel blends right in with the local aesthetic. It’s very boutique with only 9 rooms and it felt like we were staying at someone’s home. In fact, it felt so homey that we forgot that we had to check out like you do in a normal hotel! When you walk in, you’re surrounded by vibrant flowers and plants that hug every crevice. Theres a beautiful serene pool with a pool bar, and upstairs deck with tables and hammocks and plenty of chairs and beds around the pool to lounge.

It’s very quiet and the other hotel guest just relaxed around the pool reading, listening to music, and just enjoying the peacefulness of the hotel, that was my favorite part. Our room was very cozy with a king size bed and very simple decorations. it was the perfect size for 2 people. We even had a little balcony.
When you check in, you get a key to the front door and a key to your room. I didn’t notice any hotels in Tulum where there was a key card, we used an actual key which to me gave it a more home-like feel. We would come home late from partying and open the front door with the key then go up to our rooms. I just loved the whole vibe of it.

Missguided top and bottom
The beach was a taxi ride away but since we were right in the city, we could basically walk anywhere in the pueblo, we walked to get food, ice cream, and the hotel even offers bike rentals. The nice part of being in el pueblo was that the prices are much cheaper then by the beach.
I’m currently working on a Tulum travel guide with a more extensive review of the town but for now I wanted to share our stay at Howlita Tulum. I highly recommend staying there and when I go to Tulum again it will for sure be the first place I look into. All the staff was super friendly and informative and there is security at night that was equally as friendly and informative.
There were also all walks of life staying at the hotel from young to old and from all around the world. This was my first time traveling to a country and not staying in a resort and the experience has really opened my eyes to travel. I LOVED that we stayed in the city and that we stayed at Howlita and got a true experience of what Tulum is all about.
